Unwritten Rules of Flea Markets

Every flea market has its own culture, but there are universal etiquette guidelines that will make the experience better for everyone.

For Buyers

Do's ✓

  • Greet sellers with a smile and hello
  • Ask before touching delicate or valuable items
  • Handle items carefully — you break it, you buy it
  • Negotiate respectfully — it's a conversation, not a battle
  • Bring small bills and coins for easy transactions
  • Return items to their spot if you decide not to buy
  • Thank sellers even if you don't purchase

Don'ts ✗

  • Don't lowball aggressively — it's insulting
  • Don't block stalls — let others browse too
  • Don't disparage items to get a lower price
  • Don't take photos of items without asking (some sellers mind)
  • Don't haggle on already-low prices — use good judgment
  • Don't arrive before official opening unless it's customary at that market

For Sellers

Do's ✓

  • Be friendly and approachable but not pushy
  • Price items clearly — it encourages browsing
  • Keep your stall clean and organized throughout the day
  • Accept negotiation gracefully — it's part of the culture
  • Provide bags when possible
  • Be honest about item conditions — disclose flaws

Don'ts ✗

  • Don't hover over customers — give them space
  • Don't take offense at low offers — just counter politely
  • Don't block neighboring stalls with your display
  • Don't play loud music — be considerate of neighbors
  • Don't pack up early if the market is still running
  • Don't be rude to browsers — they might come back as buyers

Scandinavian Market Culture

In Scandinavia, flea market interactions tend to be:

  • Polite and understated — no aggressive haggling
  • Honest — sellers typically describe flaws upfront
  • Environmentally conscious — bring your own bags
  • Community-oriented — markets are social events
  • Cash-friendly — though mobile payment (MobilePay, Swish) is increasingly common

The Golden Rule

Treat every interaction as you'd want to be treated. Whether buying or selling, kindness and respect make flea markets the wonderful community spaces they are.
